A new driving simulator for the iPhone and iPad is proving a hit with young drivers in Kentucky.
The app, Route Zero, was released by the Kentucky State Police and gives you the opportunity to drive a “truck, pickup, SUV or van”.
Drivers have the option to get behind the wheel and get behind in the simulator, with a number of different options.
The simulator features real-time weather and traffic conditions and it allows the driver to choose from four different driving styles.
Drivers can also choose their own colour scheme and the ability to make their own customised sound effects, and there are also options for “high-fidelity audio”, where the sound of a vehicle’s engine is turned up.
The game was first released in March, but has since been downloaded more than 1 million times.
In a news release, the Kentucky Department of Transportation said the simulator was the “next step in improving driver safety and reducing traffic fatalities”.
“This app will improve safety, reduce injuries and save lives for all Kentucky residents and tourists, said state transportation director Robert Saff.”
Kentucky has the most traffic deaths in the country, with more than 5,500 drivers killed in traffic collisions every year.””
This new driving app provides drivers the opportunity for real-world training, provides real-life scenarios and allows the public to learn more about the safety of driving in the state,” he added.
The Kentucky Department for Transportation is also offering a $5,000 prize for the top player in the new game.
The new game is available for iOS and Android devices.
The Kentucky Department said it will also be made available on the App Store and Google Play in the coming weeks.
