Key points:Rail and road upgrades are expected to cost about $1 billionA Government spokesman said it would be the first in the countryTransport Minister Chris Hipkins said it was about delivering “the most efficient and reliable transport system for the nation”.
The project is being funded by a $400 million federal Government bond which was issued in November.
“It is the most ambitious rail upgrade in the world and the Government has worked tirelessly to deliver this project,” Mr Hipkins told the ABC.
“We know it will take more than just the Federal Government’s funding to complete the project.”
The Government has invested in the rail and road infrastructure of Queensland and will continue to do so as a result of the Government’s commitment to the community, as well as our economic growth.
“Mr Hipkins described the project as “the biggest infrastructure project Queenslanders have ever seen”.”
It’s about delivering the most efficient, reliable and sustainable transport system, delivering a strong and stable infrastructure that is in the best interests of Queenslanders,” he said.
The Government spokesman, Peter Haines, said it had committed to the project, which is expected to create thousands of new jobs.”
This is a long-term investment in Queensland that will improve the state’s economy, create hundreds of new good-paying jobs and bring the cost of our rail network in line with the rest of the country,” Mr Hains said.”
Queensland is a global leader in rail and is currently leading the nation in investment in rail, roads and public transport.
“Mr Hainos said the project would be completed by 2031.
Queenslanders are among the best-educated in the nation, with almost a third of Queensland’s population being from families with a tertiary education, and nearly a quarter of all students studying in Queensland.
Mr Hipkin said the upgrade would deliver on the Government ‘s commitment to attract more international students, including Australian students and Australians living overseas.”
That’s why this project has been identified as one of the top priorities for this Government,” he told the program.”
When you look at the global opportunities that Queensland offers, this is a huge asset for Queensland and it’s going to be a real game-changer for Queenslanders.
